Born Unfree

Born Unfree

Between 1936 and 1938, at the depth of the Great Depression, workers for the Works Progress Administration fanned out across the country to interview America's ex-slaves. Most were by then in their 80s, remembering lives in slavery when they were children. "Born Unfree: Stories of the Last Generation of American Slaves" seeks to collect the full biographies of the more than 2300 men and women interviewed by the WPA so that we may learn more about their lives in slavery and freedom.
